What to Wear for Outdoor Summer Photos
Professional Photographer | Little Lamb Photography
I’m so happy that the snow is melting and that summer is just around the corner. I’m starting to book summer sessions, so I wanted to give some outfit advice to my clients. Perhaps, you’re sure of what to wear for your outdoor summer photo session. This post is written just for you! Even if you haven’t booked a portrait session with me, this will give you advice to wear for your own portrait session.
As a natural light photographer, I really like shooting outdoors in nature. My goal is to give you the most beautiful portraits of you and your family. In order to acheive that 100%, I also need your help. That’s why I’m giving you tips on what to wear for outdoor summer photos. I want you to look your best. Summertime is for all sorts of portraits. I shoot family, maternity, child, baby, engagement and wedding photography during the summer.
Summer is the only season in which you can pretty much wear any colour your choose and still look fabulous. With that said, I suggest to stay away from neon colours or a lot of white. You can wear neutrals, deep colours or pastels. Blues and browns look really nice. Of course, it will depend on your location as well.
When co-ordinating outfits, choose a main colour and an accent colour. That way you can incorporate those two colours into everyone’s wardrobe. (Example: if blue is your main colour, with coral as your accent colour.) One person could wear dark blue jeans with a coral shirt. Another person could wear all blue with a coral scarf or belt. Another person could wear jeans with a blue and coral patterned shirt.
Light fabric, like cotton or linen are excellent options. For women, flowing dresses look so pretty in large open fields.
WARNING: If it’s a hot or super humid day, cotton shirts are going to show your sweat stains because the wet parts will turn the fabric a darker shade. So beware and have a backup option that’s not cotton if you think you’re going to be sweating during the shoot.
Dress for the Heat & Humidity:
Dress for the weather. We all know that July and August can be extremely hot and humid. Please dress accordingly. For women and girls, a summer dress or a skirt with a blouse will look nice. For men and boys, nice slacks will look great for the photos. I don’t advise men to wear shorts, unless they’re going for a totally casual look. However, small boys can get away with wearing them.
If you’re going to wear socks, just say no to white socks. Yup. I said it. As for footwear, please don’t arrive to your photo session wearing old or scuffed shoes. Women can wear dress shoes, high heals, boots or nice sandals. Just know that if you’re going to wear open toe shoes, make sure your toenails looks pretty. Little girls have a plethora of cute shoe choices. Men can wear loafers or dress shoes. Small boys can get away with wearing nice running shoes or loafers.
For women and girls, you’ve got so many options in the summer: necklaces, bracelets, earrings a scarf. I haven’t even mentioned hair accessories: bows, hair bands, hats.
For men and boys, you can wear a hat, watch, or scarf.
Whatever you choose to wear, make sure that your outfits aren’t completely matching, but instead that they compliment each other.
