What to Wear for Fall Photos
Ottawa Portrait Photographer
Although it still feels like summer, we’re now officially into fall. The leaves are already changing. Soon the trees will be covered in red, orange and yellow leaves. Fall is my absolute favourite time of year. No wonder so many people like to have their portraits taken during the fall. To help you look your best for your autumn photo session, I’ve written about what to wear for fall photos.
Fall has such pretty colours. The key is to choose colours that don’t clash with those autumn colours. For example, stay away from pinks, light purple and light blue. Dark blue is fine though. So are browns, greens, maroon, plum, cream or black. Avoid neon colours. You’re not supposed to be competing with the brightly coloured leaves.
It’s best to choose two main colours with one accent colour when co-ordinating outfits. For exmaple, you could use navy blue and plum as your main colours, with ochre (dark yellow) as the accent colour.
Textured fabric photographs beautifully and is perfect for the cooler fall temperatures. I’m talking about knits, tweed, wool jackets etc. Whatever you choose, make sure that it’s not covered with lint balls. Believe me, they WILL show up in the photos. Denim or thicker cotton is a great option for pants.
Women and girls also have the option to wear a dress, skirt or leggings. Of course, it will depend on the temperature. Layering can be your best friend if it’s cooler. Be creative with the layers, but not over the top. You still want to look classy.
Dress for the Weather:
Autumn can either be quite warm or quite chilly. It can also be very sunny or quite dull and dreary.
Shoes & Boots:
Like I mentioned before, autumn is unique in that it can either be quite warm or quite chilly. But what’s awesome is that you can either wear shoes or boots for your photo session because generally the temperatures are not as hot as in summer. If you choose to wear shoes, if you’re going to wear socks, please don’t wear white socks. White socks are a complete eye sore in portraits. Just say no to white socks! Better yet, just eliminate them from your sock drawer, period.
Scarves are an awesome accessory for fall photos. So are hats and vests. You can also wear jewellery like necklaces or earrings. Classic is key.
If you’re interested in booking an autumn portrait session, I’d love to hear from you. I have the perfect location in mind. I look forward to hearing from you.
