As a wedding photographer, I get quite a few inquiries about my wedding photography pricing. I also get inquiries for my portrait pricing too (family portraits, baby photos, maternity photos, etc.) Sometimes the people who inquire will hire me for my services. However, sometimes they don’t due to price and that’s ok. Everyone has their own budget that they’re willing to work with. It’s no different than choosing the quality of clothing you wear or the restaurant that you eat at. Just know that photography isn’t just about price.
As a photographer, my pricing structure is based off of my cost of doing business, experience and skill set. I completely understand if my price point is not within someone’s budget. Photographers invest thousands of dollars into the tools of the trade (cameras, lenses, computer, editing software, props, etc.). We often give up time with our families to photograph clients and spend many more hours preparing and editing images than the time you actually see us shooting. It’s easy to look at photographer’s prices and think we’re overcharging. However, the reality is we’re actually spending a lot of money and time that’s unseen.
Comparing Apples to Oranges
When you hire a photographer, it’s important to not just look at price, but to also consider whether the photographer has experience, is educated in the art of photography and knows how to use their equipment properly. Also, they need to know how to use lighting effectively and how to set up poses, so you feel natural in front of the camera. So, you can’t just compare photographers on pricing alone. Remember that.
Every photographer starts somewhere, so if saving as much money as possible is your goal, hiring a newer photographer is a great way to save money. Just be sure to check out their portfolio, so you don’t end up with buyer’s remorse. Don’t make the mistake thinking that you should get a higher priced photographer and expect them to work for the same amount of money as a new photographer who is just starting out and hasn’t invested as much time in education or practice.
