How To Pick The Perfect Wedding Photographer for you

Does Their Photography Style Speak To You?
There are many wedding photographers out there and they each have their own way of shooting. There’s photographers who will take a journalistic approach to shooting your wedding, while others shoot more traditionally, posing the couple at times. There’s also photographers that take a fine art approach to weddings. They may shoot in film, which will add some grain and soft tones. Other photographers use flash lighting to create very dramatic photos.
I don’t think one is better than then other. It depends entirely on the couple’s taste. In the end, make sure you choose a photographer whose style you love because those are the photos that you’ll look back on for the rest of your lives.
Do Your Personalities Mesh Well?
You should meet in person, if possible. If distance is a factor, meet via Skype or by phone. No matter how you meet, you should talk to each other and see if your personalities mesh. You want to make sure that there’s no personality clashes. There also need to be good chemistry between the three of you. After all, you’ll be spending many hours with this person/people. Imagine spending the bulk of your wedding day with someone who annoys you?
Will the Photographer You Meet Actually Be The Photographer At Your Wedding?
Some studios book more than one wedding on the same day. Thus, they hire other photographers to shoot some of those weddings. You may meet the owner of the studio and get along well with them. You may also love their photographic style. However, what would happen if they sent a contracted photographer to shoot your wedding. What will the hired photographer’s personality be like? Is their photography style the same as the photographer that you met with? Make sure you know whom your photographer will be on your wedding day.
Do They Do Post Production On The Wedding Photos?
Most of the time, the price a wedding photographer charges will greatly determine how much post production they spend on your wedding photos. If you’re thinking to hire a wedding photographer for $500 for eight hours of coverage, think again. This sort of photographer is most likely starting out AND they’re most likely a shoot and burn photographer.
You may be wondering what a ‘Shoot and Burn’ photographer is. They’re photographers that upload your photos from camera to computer and then burn the photos straight to DVD/USB right away without doing any sort of touch ups to the photos. Perhaps you got a big zit on your nose the day of the wedding. Or what if you couldn’t sleep the night before and have big bags under your eyes? A shoot and burn photographer will leave those nasty reminders on EVERY. SINGLE. PHOTO. Is that how you want to remember your wedding day, or do you want to look at your photos and see how beautiful everything was?
Comparing Prices Over Value
Of course, every couple will have a wedding budget. Some budgets are larger than others. However, if you plan on hiring a photographer for your wedding, be realistic in your expectations. If you’re serious about wedding photography, your budget should at least be $1500. However, don’t expect 12 hours of coverage and 2000 photos for $1500.
When hiring a wedding photographer for less than $1500 (especially less than $1000), don’t expect to get the best quality wedding images. There are certain exceptions to this rule. Perhaps you’re eloping and only need a photographer for a couple of hours. You may be able to book a photographer to shoot for 2-3 hours for $1200-$1400. However, if your budget is $800 and you want photography coverage for 6-12+ hours, clearly you’re picking a photographer by price over value. If you want to go this route, that’s your choice. However, just know that you’ll probably get what you pay for.
