Why I don’t Allow Clients to Cull Photos With Me
Ottawa Portrait and Wedding Photographer
In the past I’ve had clients ask to sit with me to go through all of the photos and then they can choose the final photos with me. In every instance, I’ve kindly explained why I don’t allow clients to cull photos with me. As a photographer, I feel that if a client is going to hire me for my photography services, they must like my photography style. This includes not only the aesthetics of the photo, like lighting and composition. It also includes my ability to give them the nicest final product.
You might be wondering what culling is. Culling is when you decrease the amount of something. For me, I shoot a fair amount of photos, then I go through them to only choose the best ones.
It takes me several hours to cull through the photos. This involves me looking at each photo in full resolution. As I’m going through the photos, I check off which ones make the cut and which ones don’t. Many times, if I’ve taken very similar photos, I will place them side by side on my computer screen. I do this to see which one has sharper focus. I also do it to see if one is slightly better looking than the other. Sometimes, a facial expression may change ever so slightly. I look for the one that is superior.
It’s not uncommon for me to head swap. I may like one photo better than another. However, perhaps one person’s eyes are closed in the photo I favour the most. If I still want to use the photo, I look at similar photos to see if I can swap faces (or even just eyes or a mouth) from another photo. This ends up making the final photo all the more lovely. However, a client may not pick up on what possibilities I can great by head swapping, so they may not even choose the photo I could have corrected with head swapping.
A client may also be disappointed in how they look in certain photos because they haven’t seen the final results. That’s why I only show my clients the photos after I’ve finished all post production on them. I don’t want them to be unhappy and think that their photo shoot is a failure because they think they look terrible in their photos. I don’t want you to worry about all of that. If you broke out or have dark circles under your eyes, no worries at all. I’ll make those things disappear.
If you like what you see, I would love to hear from you. You can either comment in the comments section or you can send me an e-mail. Better yet, book me for a portrait session or to be your wedding photographer. I hope to hear from you soon. Take care and have a great day! 🙂
